Multiple Dial-Up Networking Connections Have Same Extra Settings

ID: Q188301

SYMPTOMS

After you configure a Dial-Up Networking connection to use extra settings, all subsequent connections you create for that modem may be automatically configured with the same extra settings.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Dial-Up Networking updates the Modem.cpl file when you create a connection with extra settings. When you create a new connection for the same modem, the extra settings are automatically applied to the new connection.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, manually install another copy of the same modem driver and configure the extra settings separately. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double- click Modems.

  2. Click Add.

  3. Click the "Don't detect my modem; I will select it from a list" check box to select it, and then click Next.

  4. Click the appropriate manufacturer and model, and then click Next.

  5. Click the appropriate communications port, click Next, and then click Finish.

  6. Click the appropriate modem, and then click Properties.

  7. On the Connection tab, click Advanced, type the new extra settings in the Extra Settings box, click OK, click OK again, and then click Close.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
