ScanDisk Portion of Windows 98 Setup Takes a Long Time

SYMPTOMS

When you run Windows 98 Setup from within Windows, the ScanDisk portion of Setup may take an unusually long time to check your hard disks.


CAUSE

This issue can occur if you are loading DosIdle 2.00 in your Autoexec.bat file.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, disable DosIdle before you install Windows 98. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Restart your computer, press and hold the CTRL key until you see the Windows 98 Startup menu, and then choose Command Prompt Only.


  2. At the command prompt, type the following line, and then press ENTER:

    edit autoexec.bat


  3. Disable the line that loads the Dosidle.exe file. To do so, type rem and then press the SPACEBAR at the beginning of the line.


  4. Press ALT+F, press S (to save), press ALT+F, and then press X (to exit).


  5. Restart your computer normally, and then run Windows 98 Setup.
