SYMPTOMS

If you upgrade your Toshiba Tecra 740CDT computer to Windows 98 Second Edition while the computer is attached to a docking station with an Intel EtherExpress Pro/100+ PCI network adapter installed, your computer may stop responding (hang) during the hardware detection portion of Setup.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Crystal Plug and Play Audio System Codec driver may conflict with the EtherExpress Pro/100+ PCI network adapter installed in the docking station.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, disable the Crystal Plug and Play Audio System Codec driver, and then restart your computer:

  1. Restart your computer, press and hold down the CTRL key until the Startup menu appears, and then choose Safe Mode.

  2. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click System.

  3. Click the Device Manager tab, double-click Sound, video and game controllers, and then double-click Crystal PnP Audio System.

  4. Click to select the Disable in this hardware profile check box, click OK, and then click Close.

When you restart your computer, Setup resumes and Windows 98 Second Edition can be successfully installed.
