Some Entries May Be Truncated in the Sfclog.txt File

SYMPTOMS

When you view the System File Checker log file (Sfclog.txt), you may notice that some entries may be truncated. For example, date entries may be missing the last character that represents the year.

CAUSE

This problem can occur because the Sfclog.txt file has fixed limits for each column of information it displays. If the size of an entry exceeds the space allotted for that column of information, the entry may be truncated.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, you can modify an entry to fit the allotted space. For example, you can modify your Regional Settings for short date format from MM/DD/YYYY to MM/DD/YY, and this prevents the entry from being truncated. To do so, use the following steps:

1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Regional Settings.



2. Click the Date tab, and then click mm/dd/yy in the Short Date Style box.



3. Click OK, and then close Control Panel.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this is a problem in Windows 98.
