SYMPTOMS

When you try to add the Hewlett Packard (HP) JetAdmin service in Windows 98 by double-clicking the Network tool in Control Panel, clicking Add, clicking Services, and then clicking Add, the HP JetAdmin service may be missing.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because the HP JetAdmin service is not installed as a Network service in Windows 98. The HP JetAdmin service is available on the Windows 98 CD-ROM.

RESOLUTION

To install the HP JetAdmin service, run Setup from the following folder on your Windows 98 CD-ROM

<drive>:\drivers\printers\jetadmin\disk1

where <drive> is the drive that contains the Windows 98 CD-ROM.

MORE INFORMATION

If you had the HP JetAdmin service installed in Windows 95 before you upgraded to Windows 98, it still functions correctly. However, Microsoft recommends that you upgrade to the latest version of the HP JetAdmin service available on the Windows 98 CD-ROM.

If the HP JetAdmin service appears in the list of network services available to install, you may receive the following error message when you attempt to add the HP JetAdmin service:

The file 'hpnetprn.inf' on the Windows 98 CD-ROM could not be found. Insert Windows 98 CD-ROM in the selected drive, and click OK.

To install the HP JetAdmin service, follow the procedure in the Resolution section of this article. After running setup, there is an HP JetAdmin group under Programs.
