Warning Message Installing Virtual Private Networking or DUN

ID: Q188563

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you install Dial-Up Networking (DUN) or Virtual Private Networking (VPN) using the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel, you may receive one of the following warning messages:

Caution: Microsoft has not digitally signed the software you want to install: <device> Do you want to continue the installation?
-or-
Caution: Microsoft has not digitally signed the software you want to install: <device>

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you use system policies, and you have enabled the Digital Signature Check policy. The warning message you receive depends on the level of security specified in the policy.

When you install a program using the Add/Remove Programs tool and the Digital Signature Check policy is enabled, Setupx.dll expects a full path statement to verify that drivers have been properly signed. When you install DUN or VPN using the Add/Remove Programs tool, Setupx.dll receives a file name rather than the full path statement, causing the warning message to appear.

RESOLUTION

When you receive the warning message, click Yes if there is an option to continue. If you do not have an option to continue, contact your system administrator to lower the security setting for the Digital Security Check policy.
