IE 2.01 Dialer Unable to Connect to Windows NT RAS Server

The information in this article applies to:

• Microsoft Internet Explorer version 2.01 for Windows 3.1
• Microsoft Windows NT Server version 3.51

SYMPTOMS

Dialing into a properly functioning Windows NT RAS Server using the dialer provided in Internet Explorer 2.01 for Windows 3.1 results in the following error:

   Unable to negotiate dial-in connection (timeout).

CAUSE

Internet Explorer 2.01's PPP stack can not authenticate using Microsoft encrypted authentication (MS-CHAP).

RESOLUTION

Configure the RAS Server to require encrypted authentication or allow any authentication including clear text.
