| Computer Stops or Hangs Due to Large System Environment Variable ValuesID: Q223275
 |
After adding an environment variable that contains a large number of bytes, the computer will not restart.
Certain process start up code for system processes (CSRSS, Autochk) were only allowing 512 bytes of space for system variables, which caused memory to be overwritten.
A supported fix that corrects this problem is now available from Microsoft, but
it has not been fully regression tested and should be applied only to systems
experiencing this specific problem. If you are not severely affected by this
specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Windows NT 4.0 service pack
that contains this fix.
To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support Services
to obtain the fix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services

The new files in this hotfix increase the number of bytes to 4,000.
Users should keep the total system environment variable size to 4,000
