Word Opens Documents Read-Only Regardless of NTFS Permissions

ID: Q229817

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you open a shared document using Microsoft Word 97, you may open the document with read-only permission even though the NTFS file permissions for you are set to Full Control.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if another user who has read-only permissions has opened the file.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, configure the document to require a password to make modifications. The password works with the NTFS file permissions. If you have the NTFS permissions to modify the file, you are prompted for the password before opening the file. If you do not have the correct NTFS permissions, you are not prompted for the password.

To configure the file to use a password, follow these steps:

  1. On the File menu, click Save As.

  2. Click Options.

  3. In the Password To Modify box, type a password you want to use, and then click OK.

  4. Type the password again to confirm it, click OK, and then click Save.
