BUG: Windows 95/98 Fails to Connect to other Win 95/98 Registry

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

Under Windows 95 or Windows 98, RegConnectRegistry() fails to connect to a remote Windows 95 or Windows 98 registry after connecting to a remote Windows NT registry. The call continues to fail until the process is exited and restarted.

RESOLUTION

This bug only occurs when using the TCP/IP network protocol alone. To circumvent this problem, install the IPX/SPX protocol alongside the TCP/IP protocol.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a bug in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this bug and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

Verify that TCP/IP is the only network protocol installed on the computer by selecting Network from the Control Panel and scrolling through the list of installed components. If IPX/SPX is installed, the bug does not occur.

Before reproducing this problem, you must make sure that the Remote Administration Services is installed on both Windows 95 or Windows 98 computers. Verify that Microsoft Remote Registry is installed by selecting Network from the Control Panel and scrolling through the list of installed components. This problem can be reproduced using RegEdit.exe as follows:

1. From the Start menu, select Run.

2. In the Open textbox, type "regedit."

3. Click OK.

4. From the Registry menu, select Connect Network Registry.

5. Enter the name of a remote Windows NT computer.

6. Again, select Connect Network Registry from the Registry menu.

7. Enter the name of a remote Windows 95 or Windows 98 computer.

RESULT: The remote connection fails.
