The information in this article applies to:
An Index that contains more than 240 characters appears to lose information after the 240th character.
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
1. Enter MODIFY COMMAND TEST in the Command window.
2. Enter the following code in TEST.PRG:
i=240
SET SAFETY OFF
CREATE TABLE NEW (name c(250))
INDEX ON name TAG name
APPEND BLANK
REPLACE name WITH space(i)+"B"
APPEND BLANK
REPLACE name WITH space(i)+"C"
APPEND BLANK
REPLACE name WITH space(i)+"A"
LIST FIELDS ALLTRIM(name)
3. Issue this command: DO TEST.PRG
At this point, if I=240, adding one character to the length should give an invalid key length. However, instead of getting an error, the key length appears to be only 240 characters long with the rest lost.
