The information in this article applies to:
Playing an .AVI file that is stored in a general field of a database or executing an APPEND GENERAL command from an .AVI file will cause the computer to hang when you are quitting Windows.
This behavior occurs with Windows for Workgroups versions 3.1 and 3.11.
If you package the .AVI file as an object and you use the Paste Special command to paste the packaged object into a general field, Windows does not hang when you try to quit.
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in FoxPro versions 2.5, 2.5a, 2.5b, and 2.6 for Windows. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
WARNING: Close all open applications and save all open files before following this procedure.
1. Start FoxPro for Windows.
2. Create a database with a general field and append a record by
issuing the following commands from the Command window:
CREATE TABLE video (avi G)
APPEND
3. Double-click the general field.
4. From the Edit menu, choose Insert Object, and select Media Clip as the
Object Type. Choose OK.
5. In Media Player, choose Open from the File menu and open an .AVI file.
6. From the File menu, choose Update FoxPro to update the object.
7. Quit Media Player.
8. Close the database.
9. Reopen and browse the database that was just closed.
10. Double-click the general field that contains the object and then
double-click the .AVI object to play it.
11. Close the database.
12. Quit FoxPro.
13. Quit Windows.
At this point, the machine will hang; a black screen with a blinking cursor in the upper-left corner will appear.
