ACC2: No Permissions for Append Query on Secured Attached Table

ID: Q131814

The information in this article applies to:

SUMMARY

Moderate: Requires basic macro, coding, and interoperability skills.

If you try to run an append query on an attached table that is secure, even if you have the Run Permissions option set to Owner's, you may receive the following error message:

Record(s) can't be read; no Read Data permissions on '<attached_table>'

This article assumes that you are familiar with the Microsoft Access security model and with creating Microsoft Access applications using the security tools provided with Microsoft Access. For more information about Microsoft Access security, please refer to the "Building Applications" manual.

NOTE: This behavior no longer occurs in Microsoft Access version 7.0.

MORE INFORMATION

In Microsoft Access you can set the Run Permissions option to Owner's so that you can create queries on attached tables.

When you create an append query (by choosing Query, Append in the Query Design window), you have the option of choosing Current Database or Another Database. If you choose Current Database and point to a table that is actually an attached table in the current database, you receive the error described in the "Summary" section.

To avoid the error message, when you create the append query, choose the Another Database option. Select the Microsoft Access database file in which the table is local instead of the attachment.

NOTE: In the Options dialog box, you must still set the Run Permissions option to Owner's.
