FP97: Web Publishing Wizard Posts Content to Incorrect Location

SYMPTOMS

The Microsoft Web Publishing Wizard will allow you to use HTTP to post files to a Web server if the server has FrontPage 97 Server Extensions installed.

If you type an incorrect name for the destination of the FrontPage Web when you post to the server, your files may be posted to the root of the destination server.

CAUSE

Microsoft FrontPage makes a distinction between "subwebs" and subdirectories. The Microsoft Web Publishing Wizard does not recognize this distinction. When you type an incorrect value for a subweb in the Microsoft Web Publishing Wizard, the wizard will use the server extensions of the root web to create a subdirectory on the server.

FrontPage Subweb

A subweb is a segment of the Web server that has its own access control settings, WebBot Search Component Word lists, copy of or link to the FrontPage server extensions, and its own entry in the list of Webs obtained by the FrontPage Explorer.

To create a FrontPage subweb in FrontPage Explorer, use the New FrontPage Web or Publish FrontPage Web command on the File menu.

FrontPage Subdirectory

A subdirectory in FrontPage shares the access control settings, word lists, and server extensions of the directory in which it is located.

WORKAROUND

To recover from this error, use the following steps:

1. Open the root of the destination server and delete the files that you posted.

2. Create a new Web server entry in the Microsoft Web Publishing Wizard.

3. When the wizard prompts you for the Internet address of your web pages, make certain that the URL that you type is correct.
