SYMPTOMS

When you try to connect to a File Transfer Protocol Web site using Internet Explorer, you may receive the following error message:

Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet site: ftp://ftp.site.com/.

   The site was not found.
Make sure the address is correct, and try again.

CAUSE

This error can occur if the File Transport Protocol proxy server setting is configured incorrectly in Internet Explorer.

RESOLUTION

Make sure the proxy server settings are correct for the File Transfer Protocol. To do so, follow these steps:

1. In Internet Explorer, click Options on the View menu.

2. On the Connection tab, click Settings.

Make sure the correct proxy server and port address is specified in the FTP box. If only the HTTP box contains a proxy server and port address, you can connect to only HTTP sites using the proxy server. For information about configuring the FTP proxy server, contact your network or system administrator.

If the same proxy server is used for both FTP and HTTP Web sites, click the "Use the same proxy server for all protocols" check box to select it. This enters the same proxy server settings in all the protocol boxes.

MORE INFORMATION

A proxy server is a server on a local area network that lets you connect to the Internet without using a modem.
