SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to use Internet Explorer to view files on a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) site, you may receive the following Dr. Watson error message:

   Explorer.exe
Exception: access violation (0xc0000005), Address: 0x01ed4623

After you click OK, you may be prompted to restore the Active Desktop.

CAUSE

This error message can occur when McAfee PCFirewall is installed on your computer. PCFirewall replaces the Windows NT Wsock32.dll file with its own version of the Wsock32.dll file.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, replace the Wsock32.dll file with the Windows NT version of the Wsock32.dll file. To do this, follow these steps:

NOTE: McAfee PCFirewall version 1.0.2 uses its own version of the Wsock32.dll file for its firewall functionality. Replacing the PCFirewall version of the Wsock32.dll file disables PCFirewall.

1. Rename the Wsock32.dll file in the Windows\System32 folder to

   Wsock32.old.

For information about how to rename a file, click Start, click Help,
click the Index tab, type "renaming" (without quotation marks), and
then double-click the "Renaming files" topic.

2. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Command Prompt.

3. Type "cd\" (without quotation marks), and then press ENTER.

4. Insert the Windows NT CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then close

the Windows NT screen if it appears.

5. Type the following line at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.

      expand <drive>:\i386\wsock32.dl_ c:\<windows>\system32\wsock32.dll

where <drive> is the drive letter assigned to your CD-ROM drive, and
where <windows> is the name of the folder in which Windows NT is
   installed.

6. Type "exit" (without quotation marks), and then press ENTER to
   return to windows.
