SYMPTOMS

When you upgrade to Internet Explorer 4.0 from Internet Explorer 3.0, 3.01, 3.02a, or 3.03 for Windows 3.1, your proxy server settings may not be retained.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Internet Explorer 3.0, 3.01, 3.02a, and 3.03 for Windows 3.1 stores proxy server settings in the Iexplore.ini file. Later versions of Internet Explorer are not designed to read this file, so the settings are not transferred during the upgrade.

RESOLUTION

Add your proxy server information in Internet Explorer 4.0. To do so, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-

   click Internet.

2. Click the Connection tab.

3. Click the "Access the Internet using a proxy server" check box to

   select it.

4. Type your proxy server information in the Address and Port boxes, and
   then click OK.

MORE INFORMATION

A proxy server is a server on the local area network that lets you connect to the Internet without using a modem.
