The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows NT Workstation version 4.0
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 4.0, 4.01 for Windows NT 4.0

SYMPTOMS

After Internet Explorer stops responding (hangs), Windows NT Explorer may also stop responding.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you install the Windows Desktop Update during the installation of Internet Explorer. By default, Windows NT Explorer runs in the same process as Internet Explorer. When Internet Explorer hangs, it may cause Windows NT Explorer to stop responding also.

RESOLUTION

To prevent this behavior, run Internet Explorer in a separate process. To do so, use the following steps in Internet Explorer.

NOTE: Running Internet Explorer in a separate process may reduce its performance and use greater resources.

  1. On the View menu, click Internet Options.

  2. Click the Advanced tab, and then click the Browse In A New Process check box to select it.

  3. Click OK.

  4. Quit Internet Explorer 4.0 and then restart it.
