Wrong Folder Displayed When Typing Path in Open Box

ID: Q177615

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you type a path in the Open box to a folder or share, the folder displayed may not be the appropriate folder.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the folder contains a Desktop.ini file from the Temporary Internet Files, Tasks, My Briefcase, or Fonts folder.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, delete the Desktop.ini file from the shared folder.

NOTE: If the folder is any of the folders listed in the "Cause" section earlier in this article, do not delete the Desktop.ini file because this will create additional problems.

If the issue occurs on a remote resource, you can map the network drive instead of connecting to it by typing the path in the Open box.

MORE INFORMATION

The Desktop.ini file contains information regarding shell folders. This file contains a unique Class ID (CLSID) that identifies what portion of the shell it is in.

If the CLSID line in the Desktop.ini file is removed or changed, the symptom mentioned above does not occur.

NOTE: If you are using the Windows Desktop Update component, Desktop.ini files are created in customized folders. The issue does not occur unless the folder is one of the folders listed above.
