Cannot Open an Attached Shortcut to a Shared Folder

SYMPTOMS

When you receive a mail message that includes an attached .lnk file in Internet Mail, the attachment may not have an associated icon and you may not be able to open the attachment from the Preview pane.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the attachment is a link to a shared folder. Internet Mail cannot open this type of attachment from the Preview pane.

RESOLUTION

Open the message, and then double-click the attachment in the Read Note window.

STATUS

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
