SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to connect to your news server, you may receive the following error message:

The news server name cannot be found. Please check your Internet News
Server configuration, network connection, and TCP/IP configuration. If
this persists, contact your LAN administrator or Internet provider.

When you click OK, you receive the following error message:

Unable to download the list of newsgroups. The connection was
unexpectedly terminated by the news server. Please try again. If this
persists, contact your LAN administrator or Internet provider.

CAUSE

You may receive one or more of these error messages if your local area network (LAN) or Internet connection is not available, is not working properly, or is not configured correctly.

RESOLUTION

Verify that your news server information has been specified correctly. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. In Microsoft News, click Options on the News menu.

  2. Click the Server tab. If your news server appears in the News Server(s) list, double-click your news server in the list. Otherwise, click Add, and then type the name of your news server.

  3. On the General tab, ensure that your News Server Name and Logon settings are correct.

  4. Click the Connection tab, and then verify that the Connection settings are correct.

  5. Click the Advanced tab, and then check that the Server Port Number settings are specified correctly. Click OK.

  6. Quit and restart Internet News.

After you have verified that the news server has been specified correctly, try to connect to the news server again. If the problem persists, verify that your LAN connection or Dial-Up Networking connection is functioning properly.
