SYMPTOMS

When you export messages from Internet Mail to Microsoft Exchange and there are duplicate folder names between the two programs, you are not prompted for confirmation to overwrite the duplicate folders.

CAUSE

Internet Mail does not overwrite folders with duplicate names. Instead, it automatically appends the exported messages to your existing Exchange folders and does not prompt you for confirmation.

RESOLUTION

If you do not want Internet Mail to append messages to Exchange folders with duplicate names, change any duplicate folder names between Internet Mail and Exchange before you export your messages. To do so, use one of the following methods:

Change Duplicate Folder Names in Exchange

To change duplicate folder names in Exchange, follow these steps in Exchange for each duplicate folder name in Internet Mail:

  1. Start Exchange. To do so, double-click the Inbox icon on the desktop.

  2. In the left pane, right-click a folder that has a duplicate name in Internet Mail, and then click Rename. The folder name you type should be different from any folder names in Internet Mail.

NOTE: You cannot rename the Deleted Items, Inbox, Outbox, and Sent Items folders.

  3. In the New Name box, type the name of the new folder. Note that the folder name should be different from any folder names in Internet Mail.

  4. Click OK.

When there are no more duplicate folder names between Exchange and Internet Mail, export your Internet Mail messages by pointing to Export on the File menu in Internet Mail, and then clicking Messages.

Change Duplicate Folder Names in Internet Mail

To change duplicate folder names in Internet Mail, follow these steps in Internet Mail for each duplicate folder name in Exchange:

  1. On the File menu, point to Folder, and then click Create.

  2. Type the name of the new folder in the Folder Name box, and then click OK. The folder name you type should be different from any folder names in Exchange.

  3. In the Folders list, click a folder that has a duplicate name in Exchange.

  4. Click a message in the message list, and then click Select All on the Edit menu.

  5. Right-click an area of the message list, point to Move To in the menu that appears, and then click the folder you created in step 2.

  6. On the File menu, point to Folder, point to Delete, and then click the folder you moved the messages from in step 5.

  7. When you are prompted to delete the folder, click Yes.

When there are no more duplicate folder names between Internet Mail and Exchange, export your Internet Mail messages by pointing to Export on the File menu, and then clicking Messages.
