This article describes how to set up an Internet connection using the Internet Connection Wizard (ICW) for Internet Explorer. The ICW simplifies the process of signing up with an Internet service provider (ISP) and connecting to the Internet.

To set up an Internet connection using the ICW, use the appropriate method:

Windows 3.1 and Windows NT 3.51

1. In Program Manager, double-click Microsoft Internet Explorer, and then

   double-click Get On The Internet or the Internet Connection wizard.

2. Click Next or OK.

3. If you already have an Internet account, click Manual on the Setup

   Options dialog box, and then click Next. If you do not have an Internet
   account, click Automatic on the Setup Options dialog box, and then
   click Next or OK.

4. If you selected Manual in step 3, follow the steps in the appropriate
   Manual Setup section below to finish setting up your Internet
   connection. If you selected Automatic in step 3, follow the
   steps in the appropriate Automatic Setup section below to finish
   setting up your Internet connection.

Windows 95

1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

2. Double-click Internet.

3. On the Connection tab, click Connect.

4. If you already have an Internet account, click Manual on the Setup

   Options dialog box, and then click Next. If you do not have an Internet
   account, click Automatic on the Setup Options dialog box, and then
   click Next or OK.

5. If you selected Manual in step 4, follow the steps in the appropriate
   Manual Setup section below to finish setting up your Internet
   connection. If you selected Automatic in step 4, follow the steps in
   the appropriate Automatic Setup section below to finish setting up your
   Internet connection.

Manual Setup for Internet Explorer 4 for Windows 3.1 and Windows NT 3.51

1. Click Create A New Connection, type a name for the Internet connection

   In the Name Of Service Provider box, and then click Next.

2. Type the phone number of your Internet service provider in the Area Or
   City Code and Telephone Number boxes, if this number is long distance,
   click the Use Country And Area/City Code check box to select it, and
   then click Next.

3. Type the user name and password for your Internet account in the User
   Name and Password boxes, and then click Next.

4. If your Internet service provider automatically assigns you an
   Internet Protocol (IP) address, click "My Internet Service Provider
   automatically assigns me one," and then click Next. If your Internet
   service provider has given you a specific IP address, click Always Use
   The Following, type the address in the IP Address box, and then click
   Next.

5. Type the Domain Name Service (DNS) server IP address provided by your
   Internet service provider in the DNS Server box, and then click Next.
   If your Internet service provider gave you an alternate DNS server IP
   address, type this address in the Alternate DNS Server box before you
   click Next.

6. If you want to set up Internet Mail, click Yes, and then click Next.
   If you do not want to set up Internet Mail, click No, click Next, and
   then skip to step 7.

   In the "Create a new Outlook Express Account" dialog box, type a name
   to identify your account. When you receive the "Do you want to use a
   password to protect your mail?" prompt, choose Yes or No. If you choose
   No, click Finish, if you choose Yes, type a password, and then type it
   again to confirm it.

   In the "Do you want to set up an Internet mail account now" dialog box,
   click Yes, type your Name, and then click Next.

   Type your e-mail address, and then click Next.

   Type your e-mail server names, and then click Next.

   Choose one of the following, and then click Next.

    - Internet Mail Logon
    - Log on using POP account name and Password
    - Log on using Secure Password Authentication

   Type a name for this connection, and then continue to step 7.

7. If you want to set up Internet News, click Yes, and then click Next.
   If you do not want to set up Internet News, click No, click Next, and
   then proceed to step 8.

   On the New User Name And Password screen, type the following
   information in the appropriate boxes, and then click Next:

    - Your full name as you would like it to appear in newsgroup messages
      that you send.
    - Your e-mail address, and your NNTP server name.
    - If needed, click the "My News server requires me to log on" check
      box to select it, and then click Next.
    - The user name and password for your Internet news server.
    - If needed, click Yes when you are prompted to "Set Up Your Internet
      Directory Service", type the name of your LDAP server, and then
      click Next.
    - The Internet news server address.

8. Click Finish.

9. Click the group in which you want the icon for your Internet

   connection to be placed, and then click OK.

Manual Setup for Internet Explorer 3.x for Windows 3.1 and Windows NT 3.51

1. In the Name Of Service Provider box, type a name for the Internet

   connection, and then click Next.

2. Type the phone number of your Internet service provider in the Area Or
   City Code and Telephone Number boxes, and then click Next. If this
   number is long distance, click the Use Country And Area/City Code
   check box to select it before you click Next.

3. Type the user name and password for your Internet account in the User
   Name and Password boxes, and then click Next.

4. If your Internet service provider automatically assigns you an
   Internet Protocol (IP) address, click "My Internet Service Provider
   automatically assigns me one," and then click Next. If your Internet
   service provider has given you a specific IP address, click Always Use
   The Following, type the address in the IP Address box, and then click
   Next.

5. Type the Domain Name Service (DNS) server IP address provided by your
   Internet service provider in the DNS Server box, and then click Next.
   If your Internet service provider gave you an alternate DNS server IP
   address, type this address in the Alternate DNS Server box before you
   click Next.

6. If you want to set up Internet Mail, click Yes, and then click Next.
   If you do not want to set up Internet Mail, click No, click Next, and
   then proceed to step 7.

   On the Mail User Name And Password screen, enter the user name and
   password for your Internet mail server in the User Name and Password
   boxes, and then click Next.

   On the Mail Server Address screen, type the following information in
   the appropriate boxes, and then click Next:

    - Your full name as you would like it to appear in e-mail messages
      that you send.
    - Your e-mail address.
    - The incoming and outgoing Internet mail server addresses.

7. If you want to set up Internet News, click Yes, and then click Next.
   If you do not want to set up Internet News, click No, click Next, and
   then proceed to step 8.

   On the News User Name And Password screen, type the following
   information in the appropriate boxes, and then click Next:

    - Your full name as you would like it to appear in newsgroup messages
      that you send.
    - Your e-mail address.
    - The user name and password for your Internet news server.
    - The Internet news server address.

8. Click Finish.

9. Click the group in which you want the icon for your Internet

   connection to be placed, and then click OK.

Automatic Setup

1. Type your area or city code and the first three digits of your phone

   number in the appropriate boxes, and then click Next.

2. Click an Internet service provider in the list, and then click Sign Me
   Up. To see details for a particular Internet service provider, click
   the icon in the More Info column. After you click Sign Me Up, the
   wizard dials the Internet service provider and begins the Setup
   process.

Manual Setup for Internet Explorer 3.x for Windows 95

1. In the Name Of Service Provider box, type a name for the Internet

   connection, and then click Next.

2. Type the phone number of your Internet service provider in the Area Or
   City Code and Telephone Number boxes, and then click Next. If this
   number is long distance, click the Use Country And Area/City Code
   check box to select it before you click Next.

   the appropriate boxes, and then click Next:

    - Your full name as you would like it to appear in e-mail messages
      that you send.
    - Your e-mail address.
    - The incoming and outgoing Internet mail server addresses.

7. If you want to set up Internet News, click Yes, and then click Next.
   If you do not want to set up Internet News, click No, click Next, and
   then proceed to step 8.

   On the News User Name And Password screen, type the following
   information in the appropriate boxes, and then click Next:

    - Your full name as you would like it to appear in newsgroup messages
      that you send.
    - Your e-mail address.
    - The user name and password for your Internet news server.
    - The Internet news server address.

8. Click Finish.

9. Click the group in which you want the icon for your Internet

   connection to be placed, and then click OK.

Automatic Setup

1. Type your area or city code and the first three digits of your phone

   number in the appropriate boxes, and then click Next.

2. Click an Internet service provider in the list, and then click Sign Me
   Up. To see details for a particular Internet service provider, click
   the icon in the More Info column. After you click Sign Me Up, the
   wizard dials the Internet service provider and begins the Setup
   process.

Manual Setup for Internet Explorer 4 for Windows 95 and Windows 98

1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

2. Double-click Internet.

3. On the Connections tab, click Connect.

4. If you do not have an Internet account, click "I want to sign up and

   configure my computer for a new Internet account." and follow the on-
   screen instructions.

5. If you already have an Internet account, click to select "I have an
   existing Internet account through my phone line or a local area network
   (LAN). Help me set up my computer to connect to this Internet account."

6. Click Next and then click to select "Select this option if you are
   accessing the Internet using an Internet service provider or a
   local area network (LAN)."

Click to select Connect Using My Phone Line, and then click Next.

Click to select Create a new dial-up connection and then click Next.

7. Type the phone number of your Internet service provider in the Area Or

   City Code and Telephone Number boxes, and then click Next. If this
   number is long distance, click the Use Country And Area/City Code
   check box to select it before you click Next.

8. Type the user name and password for your Internet account in the User
   Name and Password boxes, and then click Next.

9. Click No when prompted to change the Advanced settings, and then click
   Next.

   Note: If your Internet service provider requires you to change
   the advanced settings for this connection, click Yes and then click
   Next. If you are not sure if you need to change the advanced settings,
   contact your Internet service provider.

10. Type a name for the dial-up connection, and then click Next.

11. If you want to set up Internet Mail, click Yes, and then click Next.

   If you do not want to set up Internet Mail, click No, click Next, and
   then proceed to step 18.

12. Click to select "Create a new Internet mail account" and then click
    Next.

13. Type your name as you would like it to appear, and then click Next.

14. Type your e-mail address and then click Next.

15. Click the mail server you are using and then type the name of your

   incoming and outgoing mail servers, and then click Next.

16. On the Internet Mail Logon screen, enter the e-mail account name and
   password for your Internet mail server in the POP Account Name and
   Password boxes, and then click Next.

17. Choose a name for this e-mail account and then click Next.

18. If you want to set up Internet News, click Yes, and then click Next.

   If you do not want to set up Internet News, click No, click Next, and
   then proceed to step 24.

19. Click "Create a new Internet news account" and then click Next.

20. Type your name as you would like it to appear in newsgroup messages

    that you send, and then click Next.

21. Type your e-mail address, and then click Next.

22. Type the name of the Internet News (NNTP) server your Internet service

   provider has given you, and then click Next.

   NOTE: If your news server requires you to log on, click to select "My
   news server requires me to log on, click Next, and then enter the
   account name and password your Internet service provider has given you.

23. Type a name for this news account, and then click Next.

24. If you wish to set up an Internet directory service, click Yes, click

   Next, and then follow the on-screen instructions. If you do not want
   to setup an Internet directory service, click No, click Next, and then
   click Finish.
