SYMPTOMSWhen you attempt to access a Web page that uses Japanese character set (JIS) encoding on a computer running Microsoft Personal Web Server for Macintosh, the page may not be displayed properly.
CAUSEPersonal Web Server for Macintosh supports a subset of the Active Server Pages functionality available with Microsoft Internet Information Server and treats all files with .asp, .html, and .htm extensions as Active Server Pages files. When Active Server Pages files are processed, all instances of the "<%" character combination are removed. If the HTML file associated with the Web page you are attempting to access contains instances of this character combination, all instances are removed and the page may not be displayed properly. The "<%" character combination is common in JIS-encoded HTML files.
RESOLUTIONTo prevent Personal Web Server from displaying JIS-encoded Web pages, use the .jis extension on HTML files associated with the Web pages instead of the .html or .htm extension.
MORE INFORMATIONJIS encoding is used in Web pages that use the JIS character set. JIS is a non-Windows character set that is frequently used in Japanese Web pages.
