Internet Explorer 1.5 May Fail on LanManager / Win 3.1 Clients

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

Internet Explorer version 1.5 can be installed on Microsoft Windows version 3.1 client with Microsoft LAN Manager version 2.2c TCP/IP Stack. However, it will fail to resolve the hosts names to IP addresses via DNS or hosts file.

WORKAROUND

Use the numeric IP address instead of the HostName in the URL; for example, use http://198.105.232.5 instead of http://www.microsoft.com.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Internet Information Server version 1.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
