When you type an asterisk (*) in the Extends field of the Create New Class dialog box, classes not in the current CLASSPATH may show up. The CLASSPATH is set in Tools.Options.Directories,Class files. For example, classes in other projects in the same workspace may show up. If you select one of those classes to extend, you may get errors when you build the project, because Visual J++ cannot find their .class files.
When using the Create New Class dialog box to create a class that extends an existing one, select or type in only class names that are in the same project or are in the current CLASSPATH.
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
