The information in this article applies to:

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious, system-wide problems that may require you to reinstall Windows NT to correct them. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use this tool at your own risk.

SYMPTOMS

After you install Microsoft IntelliType version 1.1 on a computer running Microsoft Windows NT version 4.0, you may receive the following error message when you start your computer:

You attempted to run IntelliType under a newer or different version of
   Windows.

Re-run the IntelliType Setup to upgrade the software and determine if
this version of IntelliType is supported by your version of Windows.

CAUSE

Windows NT 4.0 directly supports the Microsoft Natural Keyboard; there- fore, the IntelliType software is not necessary. As a result, IntelliType version 1.1 is incompatible with Windows NT 4.0.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this error message, use any of the following methods:

Method 1

Install the Itupd.exe file, an update to the Microsoft IntelliType software. For information about how to install the Itupd.exe file, see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

 1. Using Windows NT Explorer or My Computer, verify the number of folders

    d. Use Registry Editor to delete the string "c:\msinput\point32.exe"
       from the following registry key:

          HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\
             Windows
