INS Doesn't Accept Articles with a Blank Distribution Field

SYMPTOMS

Internet News Server (INS) doesn't accept articles with a blank distribution field. The following error message appears: 

   437 (607) Transfer Failed - Do Not Try Again -- The 'Distribution:'
   field requires one or more values

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the fix referenced below or wait for the next Microsoft Commercial Internet Server service pack.

With the fix applied, INS accepts client postings that contain empty distribution headers. Old UNIX clients such as trn generate empty distribution headers.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Commercial Internet Server version 1.0. A supported fix is now available, but has not been fully regression-tested and should be applied only to systems experiencing this specific problem. Unless you are severely impacted by this specific problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Service Pack that contains this fix. Contact Microsoft Technical Support for more information.
