"Cannot Read from Drive..." Starting MOM Toolbar

SYMPTOMS

When you start Microsoft Office Manager (MOM), you receive the following error message

System Error: Cannot read from drive <drive>

CAUSE

This error occurs when the registration file, REG.DAT, contains a reference to the CD-ROM drive for one of the applications listed on the Toolbar tab in the Customize dialog box. The problem also occurs if the MSOFFICE.INI file contains a reference to the CD-ROM drive for one of the custom applications that you add to the MOM toolbar. This error message appears only when you start the MOM toolbar, or when the CD-ROM drive contains an audio disk or does not contain a disk. The error occurs only once (the first time you start the MOM toolbar). If you close the MOM toolbar and then start it again, you do not receive the error message.

WORKAROUND

To avoid receiving this error message, insert a readable CD in the CD-ROM drive before you start the MOM toolbar.

MORE INFORMATION

Note that this problem is not exclusive to Microsoft Office Manager. An application has no way of determining whether there is a readable CD in the CD-ROM drive.
