SUMMARY
In Microsoft Organizational Chart, versions 1.0 and 2.0, you can control
some of the default settings for new charts by clicking Options on the Edit
menu.
If you are using Organizational Chart 1.0, you can select the
following:
- Use standard 4-box template for new charts
- Use standard 1-box template for new charts
- Remember current magnification for new charts
If you are using Organization Chart 2.0, you can select the
following:
- Use standard 4-box template for new charts
- Use standard 1-box template for new charts
- Remember current topmost box, use as a 1-box template for new charts
- Remember current magnification for new charts
No other menus and commands in Organizational Chart allow you to select
other types of defaults (for example, font, line style, box style, chart
style, and such).

You can modify the template that the default chart is based on. If you are
running Microsoft Windows, the template is called Template.mso. By default,
it is located in one of the following folders:
Windows\Msapps\Orgchart
-or-
Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Orgchart
If you are running Microsoft Office for the Macintosh version 4.2, the file
is called MSOrgChart Template. It is located in the Microsoft folder.
If you are running Microfot Office 98 Macintosh Edition, the file is called
MS Organization Chart Template. It is located in the Microsoft Office
98:Office folder.
Use one of the following methods to open the default template.
NOTE: Before you modify the default template, make a backup copy.
Method 1: Start Stand-Alone Microsoft Organization Chart
To start the stand-alone version, do the following:
- If you are running Windows, double-click Orgchart.exe in Windows
Explorer or File Manager.
This file is in one of the following folders:
Windows\Msapps\Orgchart
-or-
Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Orgchart
If you are using Microsoft Office for the Macintosh version 4.2,
double-click the MS Organization Chart 1.0 file in the Microsoft folder.
If you are using Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition, double-click
MS Organization Chart 2.0 in the Microsoft Office 98:Office folder.
- In the Startup dialog box, click MSOrgChart Template (Macintosh) or
Template.mso (Windows), and then click Open.
NOTE: For Template.mso to appear in the list of files, first click
All Files on the Files Of Type list.
- Modify the default organization chart.
- On the File menu, click Save.
- On the File menu, click Quit (Macintosh) or Exit (Windows).
Method 2: Start Microsoft Organization Chart from Another Program
To start the Organization Chart from another program, do the following:
- Start a Microsoft Office program (for example, Word or PowerPoint).
- On the Insert menu, click Object.
- Click Organization Chart in the Object Types list.
- When Microsoft Organization chart is stared, click Open on the File
menu.
- In the Open dialog box, click MSOrgChart Template (Macintosh) or
Template.mso (Windows), and then click Open.
NOTE: For Template.mso to appear in the list of files, first click
All Files on the Files Of Type list.
- Modify the default organization chart.
- On the File menu, click Save.
Next time you start Organization Chart, the default chart reflects the
changes you made to the template.
