OFF: Icons on Office Toolbar Display Generic Windows Icon

SYMPTOMS

When you perform a Run From Network Server or Run From CD installation of Microsoft Office, buttons on the Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar do not display the correct program icon. In Microsoft Office 95, the Make an Appointment, Add a Task, and Add a Contact buttons on the Office toolbar of the Office 95 Shortcut Bar display the generic Windows icon instead of the appropriate Schedule+ icon. In Microsoft Office 97 these buttons are named New Appointment, New Task, and New Contact and are located on the Office toolbar of the Office 97 Shortcut Bar.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs under Windows NT, version 3.51 when the icon for an item on the Shortcut Bar is located on a network drive or on a CD-ROM drive. For example, when you perform a Run From Network Server installation of Microsoft Office, the icons for the Add a Task, Add a Contact, and Make an Appointment buttons are located in the Schdpl32.exe file on the network server, and each of these buttons displays the generic Windows icon.

Note that this behavior does not affect the functionality of the buttons on the Office Shortcut Bar or of the button name displayed for the button (ToolTip). Only the button icon is affected by this problem.

This behavior also affects the following icons that are not displayed on the Office toolbar by default:

Microsoft Excel
Microsoft PowerPoint
Microsoft Schedule+
Microsoft Word

Note that the icons displayed in the Msoffice\Shortcut Bar\Office folder (where Msoffice is the folder to which you installed Microsoft Office) also display the generic Windows icon.

This problem does not occur under Windows 95 or in Microsoft Windows NT, version 4.0.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
