When you hold down the CTRL key, and click a button on the Office Shortcut Bar, you may receive an Illegal Operation error message. If you click Details, a message similar to the following appears:
Specifically, this problem may occur when you hold down the CTRL key and click the Office Compatible button on the Office toolbar.MSOFFICE caused an invalid page fault in module MSOFFICE.EXE at
0137:5000170c.
This problem occurs if you hold down the CTRL key and click a button on the Office Shortcut Bar that is created for a network share or a folder on a network share, if the path to the target folder uses the Universal Naming Convention (UNC). For example, if a button on the Office Shortcut Bar has the following shortcut target
\\computer\shareyou receive the Illegal Operation error message when you hold down CTRL and click this button on the Office Shortcut Bar.

\\computer\share\user
\\computer\share\user\filesAdditionally, this problem does not occur if the shortcut target uses a persistent connection to the network, such as F:\user.
To avoid receiving an Illegal Operation error message when you click a button on the Office Shortcut Bar, do not hold down the CTRL key when you click a button.
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products
listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem
and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it
becomes available.
