OFF97: Generic Icons Appear on OSB After RNS Installation

SYMPTOMS

When you perform a Run From Network Server (RNS) installation of Microsoft Office 97, the buttons on the Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar (OSB) may appear with generic icons.


CAUSE

This problem may occur if the network connection from your computer to your server is particularly slow or there is a large amount of network traffic. If this is the case, the OSB may be unable to obtain icons from the individual programs stored on the server. As a result, the OSB shows generic icons instead.


RESOLUTION

You can eliminate this problem by downloading and installing a set of icons from the Microsoft Web site. These icons are designed specifically for use with the OSB.

To install the icons, do the following:
  1. Using the Windows Explorer, create a new folder on your computer's hard disk. For example, C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Officons.


  2. Double-click the Officons.exe program you downloaded from the Microsoft Web site. Click Yes to unpack the icons to a folder of your choice. Read the license agreement and click Yes.


  3. In the Microsoft Office 97 Toolbar Icons dialog box, either type the path to the folder you created in step 1, or click Browse and select the folder, and click OK.


  4. Click OK to exit the icon installation program.


To use the icons with the OSB, do the following:
  1. Move the following icon (.ico) files from the folder you created in step 1, above, to the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office folder: 
    
      Binder.ico     Osa.ico
      Excel.ico      Outlook.ico
      Findfast.ico   Powerpnt.ico
      Msaccess.ico   Winword.ico
      Msoffice.ico


  2. Right-click the button on the OSB that you want to change, and then click Properties.


  3. Click the Shortcut tab.


  4. Click Change Icon.


  5. Click Browse.


  6. In the Change Icon dialog, in the Files Of Type list, click Icon Files. Select the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office folder. Select the *.ico file you want to use, and then click Open.


  7. Click OK twice.


  8. Repeat steps 2 through 7 for each button whose icon you want to update.


These steps are also documented in the Readme.txt file stored in the folder you created in step 1, above.


STATUS

The problem described above is a known problem when using the Microsoft Office 97 Shortcut Bar. The problem is correctible by downloading a set of icons from the Microsoft Web site.


MORE INFORMATION

When you perform a Run From Network Server installation of Office 97, none of the programs (such as Microsoft Word 97) are actually copied to your computer's hard disk. Instead, the programs remain on the server.

When you launch the OSB, it must connect to each of the programs so that it can determine which icon to display on each button. If the program cannot be contacted quickly, the OSB will display a generic icon for each button. This problem may occur if your network is very busy or is very slow.
