SYMPTOMS
When you run the Microsoft Office Setup program under Windows NT 3.51, the
My Documents folder is not created. However, it is automatically created
after you start one of the Microsoft Office programs listed at the
beginning of this article.
CAUSE
This behavior occurs when the following conditions are true:
- You install Microsoft Office 97 on a computer running Microsoft Windows
NT version 3.51.
-and-
- You start one of the Microsoft Office programs listed at the beginning
of this article and you do any of the following:
- Click Options on the Tools menu
- Open a file or display the Open dialog box
- Save a file or display the Save dialog box
STATUS
This behavior is by design of Microsoft Office 97 under Microsoft Windows
NT version 3.51.

The My Documents folder is the default file location for the Microsoft
Office 97 programs under Microsoft Windows NT version 3.51. The My
Documents folder is created when you first start your Microsoft Office
program and display the Open, Save, or Options dialog boxes. The My
Documents folder is created even if you change the default file location
to a different folder.
To change the default file location, use the following appropriate
methods.
Microsoft Word
To change the default file location in Microsoft Word, use the following
steps:
- On the Tools menu, click Options.
- Click the File Location tab, click Documents under File Types, and then
click Modify.
- In the Modify Location dialog box, open to the folder that you want
to designate as the default documents folder, or click Create New
Folder to create a new folder.
Microsoft Excel
To change the default file location in Microsoft Excel, use the following
steps:
- On the Tools menu, click Options.
- Click the General tab and type a new path in the Default File Location
box.
Microsoft PowerPoint
- On the Tools menu, click Options.
- Click the Advanced tab and type a new path into the Default File
Location box.
