OFF97: ODBC Control Panel Fails After Installing IIS 2.0ID: Q161977
|
When you attempt to start the ODBC Data Source Administrator by double-
clicking the ODBC icon in Windows NT Control Panel, the pointer changes to
an hourglass for approximately two seconds, but the ODBC Data Source
Administrator is not started.
This problem will occur if the following conditions are true:
To correct this problem, use either of these methods.
NOTE: Because there are several versions of Windows, the following steps
may be different on your computer. If they are, please consult your product
documentation to complete these steps.
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS), version 2.0, is included with
Microsoft Windows NT Server, version 4.0. However, IIS is not automatically
installed when you install Microsoft Windows NT Server on your computer's
hard disk.
The Setup programs for both Microsoft Office 97 and IIS 2.0 install ODBC-
related files in the Winnt\System32 folder. Microsoft Office 97 installs
later versions of ODBC files (version 3.0) than IIS 2.0 (version 2.5).
Under normal circumstances, Setup will not replace newer files with older
files. However, the IIS 2.0 Setup program does not check to see whether it
is replacing newer ODBC files with older ones. Therefore, when you install
IIS 2.0 after you install Microsoft Office 97, double-clicking the ODBC
Data Source Administrator icon in Control Panel does not work. The earlier
Odbccp32.dll and Odbcint.dll files installed by IIS 2.0 do not work
correctly with the later versions of the ODBC files installed by Microsoft
Office 97.
