ID: Q161977

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to start the ODBC Data Source Administrator by double- clicking the ODBC icon in Windows NT Control Panel, the pointer changes to an hourglass for approximately two seconds, but the ODBC Data Source Administrator is not started.

CAUSE

This problem will occur if the following conditions are true:

RESOLUTION

To correct this problem, use either of these methods.

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, please consult your product documentation to complete these steps.

Method 1: Copy files from the Office 97 CD-ROM

  1. Locate the Odbccp32.dll and Odbcint.dll files. They should be in the root folder of your Microsoft Office 97 CD-ROM.

  2. Copy and paste the files in the Winnt\System32 folder on your computer's hard disk (for example, C:\Winnt\System32).

You should be able to run the ODBC Data Source Administrator.

Method 2: Reinstall Microsoft Office 97

To reinstall Microsoft Office 97, follow these steps:

  1. On the Start menu, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.

  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs. Click the Install/Uninstall tab.

  3. In the list of installed programs, click Microsoft Office 97, and then click Add/Remove.

  4. When the Microsoft Office 97 Setup dialog box appears, click Reinstall.

  5. When reinstallation is complete and all files have been copied to your hard disk, restart the computer if you are prompted to do so.

The ODBC Data Source Administrator should now run correctly when you double-click the ODBC icon in Control Panel.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS), version 2.0, is included with Microsoft Windows NT Server, version 4.0. However, IIS is not automatically installed when you install Microsoft Windows NT Server on your computer's hard disk.

The Setup programs for both Microsoft Office 97 and IIS 2.0 install ODBC- related files in the Winnt\System32 folder. Microsoft Office 97 installs later versions of ODBC files (version 3.0) than IIS 2.0 (version 2.5).

Under normal circumstances, Setup will not replace newer files with older files. However, the IIS 2.0 Setup program does not check to see whether it is replacing newer ODBC files with older ones. Therefore, when you install IIS 2.0 after you install Microsoft Office 97, double-clicking the ODBC Data Source Administrator icon in Control Panel does not work. The earlier Odbccp32.dll and Odbcint.dll files installed by IIS 2.0 do not work correctly with the later versions of the ODBC files installed by Microsoft Office 97.
