SUMMARY

When you run the Setup program for Microsoft Office 97, the Office Shortcut Bar may not be installed. In addition, when you close the Office Shortcut Bar, it prompts you whether to start it automatically when you start Microsoft Windows. This behavior is different from earlier versions of the Office Shortcut Bar.

The behavior of Setup in Microsoft Office 97 and Microsoft Office 97 SR-1 Enterprise Update is different. For the specific differences, see the "More Information" section in this article.

MORE INFORMATION

The following tables list the installation types for Microsoft Office and whether the Setup program installs the Office Shortcut Bar when you select a particular installation type.

Setup
Type
Microsoft
Office 97
Microsoft Office 97 SR-1
Enterprise Update
Typical No Yes
Custom Yes* Yes
Run From Server Yes Yes
Run From CD No** No**

Notes:

* If you click Select All.

** The Office Shortcut Bar is not installed into your Startup folder; however a shortcut to the Office Shortcut Bar is installed in the Program Files\Microsoft Office folder. This shortcut is named "Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar." If you start the Office Shortcut Bar from this shortcut, the following message appears

Would you like to configure the Office Shortcut Bar to start
   automatically whenever Windows is started?

and you can click Yes or No. If you click Yes, a shortcut for the Office Shortcut Bar is added to your Startup folder, and the next time you start Windows, the Office Shortcut Bar is automatically started. If you click No, the Office Shortcut Bar is started, but a shortcut is not added to your Startup folder.

Another new behavior of the Office Shortcut Bar is to display a message when you close it. With the Office Shortcut Bar running, if you use the right-click the Office Shortcut Bar title bar, and then click Exit on the Shortcut menu, the following message appears:

You are closing the Office Shortcut Bar. The Office Shortcut Bar will
start again automatically when you start Windows. Do you want the Office
Shortcut Bar to start automatically when you start Windows?

You can then click Yes or No.

If you click Yes, the Office Shortcut Bar continues to appear every time you restart your computer.

If you click No, the next time you restart your computer, the Office Shortcut Bar is not started because it is no longer in the Startup folder.

NOTE: If you run the Office Setup program in maintenance mode, the Setup program indicates that the Office Shortcut Bar is installed.

If you want to reset the Office Shortcut Bar so that it reappears every time you restart your computer (assuming it is installed), follow these steps:
  1. On the Start menu, point to Settings and click Taskbar.

  2. Click the Start Menu Programs tab and click Add.

  3. In the Create Shortcut dialog box, click Browse.

  4. In the Browse dialog box, locate the shortcut for the Office Shortcut Bar. By default, it is located in the Program Files\Microsoft Office folder.

  5. Click the Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar shortcut that you found in step 4, and then click Open.

  6. In the Create Shortcut dialog box, click Next.

  7. In the Select Program Folder dialog box, click the StartUp folder, and then click Next.

  8. In the "Select a Title for the Program" dialog box, click Finish.

  9. In the Taskbar Properties dialog box, click OK.

The next time you restart your computer, the Office Shortcut Bar appears.
