ID: Q163820

  |
The information in this article applies to:
-
Microsoft Office 97 for Windows

-
Microsoft Windows NT Workstation version 3.51

SYMPTOMS
When you run Microsoft Office 97 Setup, the following error message may
appear:
There is insufficient disk space or memory to run setup.
CAUSE
This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:
- You run Microsoft Office 97 Setup by double-clicking a Program Manager
   item that you created.
   -and-

- The Program Manager item uses a Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path
   for the working directory.
   -and-

- You are using Microsoft Windows NT 3.51.
   -and-

- You are using a machine that uses a Pentium-based processor.

WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, use either of the following methods.
Method 1: Map a Drive to the Network Path
You can use a mapped network drive instead of a UNC path in the Working
Directory box. To do this, use the following steps:
- In Program Manager, double-click File Manager in the Main program group.

- On the Disk menu, click Connect Network Drive.

- In the Drive list, click the drive letter that allows you to run
   Microsoft Office.
Contact your network administrator if you have any questions about
   which drive to use.

- In the Path box, type the UNC path for the network location of
Microsoft Office. The path should use the following syntax

      \\<Computername>\<Sharename>

where <Computername> is the server name and <Sharename> is the share
   name.
Contact your network administrator if you have any questions about
   which UNC path to use.

- Select the Reconnect At Logon check box if it not already selected.

- Click OK.

- On the File menu, click Exit.

- Select the Program Manager item that you want to start. On the File
menu, click Properties. Type the mapped drive letter you created in the
Working Directory box. Typing the letter replaces the UNC path name.

- Click OK.

When you restart the computer, the error message does not appear.
Method 2: Clear the Working Directory
Microsoft Office 97 Setup does not require that you use a working
directory. To clear the Working Directory box, use the following steps:
- Select the icon that you want to start. On the File menu, click
   Properties.

- Delete any text in the Working Directory box.

- Click OK.
