OFF98: Errors When Inserting Workbook into MS Word Document

Last reviewed: February 4, 1998
Article ID: Q180451
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition
  • Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition
  • Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition

SYMPTOMS

If you insert a Microsoft Excel workbook object into a document in Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition, the computer may not respond for a very long time. When it does respond, you may receive either or both of the following error messages:

The action cannot be completed because Microsoft Excel is busy.

    -or-

The server application, source file, or item cannot be found.
Make sure the application is properly installed, and that it has not
   been deleted, moved, or renamed.

When you dismiss all of the error messages, the workbook is not inserted into the document.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the following conditions are true:

  • In Microsoft Word, you click Object on the Insert menu.

        -and-

  • You click the From File button, select a Microsoft Excel workbook, and then click Insert.

        -and-

  • The Microsoft Excel workbook contains an Auto_Open macro or a Workbook_Open macro.

WORKAROUND

To prevent this problem from occurring, either remove or disable the Auto_Open and Workbook_Open macros in the workbook. After you do this, you can insert the workbook into a document in Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition without receiving an error message.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

When you insert a workbook into a document in Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition, and the workbook contains either an Auto_Open macro or a Workbook_Open macro, the macro attempts to run. However, because Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition is not the active program, the macro runs in the background. This may cause a problem, especially if the macro displays any message boxes or other dialog boxes.
