SUMMARY

In the programs listed at the beginning of this article, the "The Microsoft Sound.wav" file is played whenever you choose About from the Help menu. This wave file is played regardless of the settings in the Windows 95 Sounds control panel.

MORE INFORMATION

The behavior described above can be demonstrated by clicking the button in the extreme left or top corner of the Microsoft Office 95 Shortcut Bar and clicking "About Microsoft Office" on the menu. In the other programs listed at the beginning of this article, the behavior can be demonstrated by clicking the Help menu and then clicking About Microsoft <product>, where <product> is the name of the program that you are working in.

This behavior is by design. In the situations described in this article, the sound produced by the "The Microsoft Sound.wav" file is independent of the settings found in the Sounds Control Panel.

You can prevent the sound from being played by following these steps:

  1. On the Start menu, point to Find, and click Files or Folders.

  2. In the Named box, type "The Microsoft Sound.wav" and include the quotation marks. Click Find Now.

  3. When the file is found, right-click on the file name. On the popup menu, click Rename.

  4. Change the name of the file to "The Microsoft Sound 2.wav" and press ENTER. Close the Find dialog box.

The sound will no longer play when you click "About Microsoft <product>."
