Too Many Hits When Extended Character in Documentation Search

SYMPTOMS

When you search for text in Microsoft Office Online Documentation, if you enter an extended character in the Search For box, the items found may include items that do not contain the extended character you entered. For example, if you search for the letter c with the cedilla (OPTION+C), 78 topics are found: these topics include items that contain the letter c with the cedilla and items that contain the letter c without a diacritical mark.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

Note that some extended characters are ignored when you use them in the Search dialog box. When you enter a string in the Search For box that contains words or characters that are ignored, you may receive the following error message when you choose Search:

   All words in the search are "stopped" words (i.e. words that are
   ignored.)

After you receive this error message, the Search Results window appears with zero topics found.

This behavior occurs when you search on a single character such as the copyright symbol (OPTION+G) and the letter a with a ring (OPTION+A).
