WORD 95: GP Fault After Inserting Equation and MS Excel Object

SYMPTOMS

After you insert an Equation Editor object and an Excel object in Word, you may receive the following general protection (GP) fault:

WINWORD.EXE Application Error (Unknown software exception (0xc00000fd) at location 0x005ce739)


CAUSE

CAUTION: Save and close all your work before following these steps.

To reproduce this problem

  1. Start Word.


  2. From the Insert menu, choose Object.


  3. Select Microsoft Equation 2.0.


  4. Create any equation and click the document.


  5. From the Insert menu, choose Object.


  6. Select a Microsoft Excel Worksheet.


  7. From the File menu in Microsoft Excel, choose New.


  8. Select Blank Document, and choose OK.


  9. From the Window menu, choose Document1.


The error message appears and you must exit and restart Windows.


WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use the following steps:

  1. Follow steps 1-3 in the "To reproduce this problem" section above.


  2. In Step 4, after you insert the Equation, press ENTER to create a blank line.


  3. Insert the Microsoft Excel object.


Note that you can delete the blank line after the Microsoft Excel object is created.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word for Windows 95, version 7.0. Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
