When you print a document that contains equations created with Equation Editor version 2.0, the first and/or last characters or symbols of the equations do not print. The most commonly missed characters are "U," "V," "W," parentheses, and braces. These equations appear complete when viewed in Normal view, Page Layout view, and Print Preview.
This problem occurs when you are using the Hewlett-Packard (HP) LaserJet HPPCL printer driver.
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem with Equation Editor version 2.0. This problem was corrected in version 2.0a, which is available with the Word 6.0a for Windows Patch and the Word 6.0a for Windows full disk set.
Select the Print TrueType As Graphics option using the following instructions:
1. Open Windows Control Panel.
2. Choose the Printers icon.
3. Under Installed Printers, select the LaserJet.
4. Choose the Setup button.
5. Choose the Options button.
6. Select the Print TrueType As Graphics check box.
7. Choose the OK button. Choose the OK button again, then choose the Close
button.
Insert extra spaces at the beginning or end of an equation in Equation Editor, then crop the object so that the extra spaces do not appear when you print. To do this, use the following steps:
1. Edit the equation by double-clicking it or by selecting it, choosing
Equation Object from the Edit menu, and then choosing Edit from the list
of options.
2. Insert extra spaces as follows:
a. If the nonprinting character is the first character of the equation,
place the insertion point before it and insert an extra space by
pressing CTRL+SHIFT+SPACEBAR.
b. If the nonprinting character is the last character of the equation,
place the insertion point after it and insert an extra space by pressing
CTRL+SHIFT+SPACEBAR.
c. Return to the document by clicking outside the equation once.
d. Crop the extra space in the equation object as follows:
1. Select the equation by clicking it once.
2. From the Format menu, choose the Picture command.
3. Under Crop From, type appropriate left and/or right measurement(s)
required to cover the inserted extra spaces.
To correct the problem in PowerPoint, ungroup the equation, then all the characters will print.
