PRB: IE Error When Posting to an ASP That Initiates Redirects

ID: Q175318

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

The following Internet Explorer error occurs when POSTing a form to an Active Server Pages (.asp) file that initiates multiple "response.redirect."

Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet site http://<your">http://<yourserver>/<your Web>/<your asp file>The requested item could not be found.

CAUSE

The conditions that cause this error to occur are as follows:

  1. The requesting page uses a Post to an ASP page.

  2. The ASP page issues a "Response.redirect" ("HTTP302").

  3. The redirected page redirects to another page.

RESOLUTION

The correct solution is to re-design the Web application so that a redirect is not issued when a HTM forms submits a POST.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

The following text is from the HTTP 1.0 Spec located on:

http://www.internic.net/rfc/rfc1945.txt

"9.3 Redirection 3xx"

"302 Moved Temporarily If the 302 status code is received in response to a request using the POST method, the user agent must not automatically redirect the request unless it can be confirmed by the user since this might change the conditions under which the request was issued."
'

"NOTE: When automatically redirecting a POST request after receiving a 302 status code, some existing user agents will erroneously change it into a GET request."

Internet Explorer incorrectly handles the situation described above in that it erroneously changes it into a GET request when it should fail or prompt the user to confirm the redirect.
