OL97: ErrMsg: OUTLLIB.DLL is Linked to Missing Export MAPI32.DLL

SYMPTOMS
When you start Microsoft Outlook 97 you receive the following message
The OUTLLIB.DLL file is linked to missing export MAPI32.DLL:36.
followed by:
A device attached to the system is not functioning.
If you try to check your Windows Messaging Profile properties in Control
Panel, when you double-click the Mail and Fax icon (or Mail icon if you do
not have fax services installed), you receive the following error:
You need more memory or system resources. Close some windows and try
again.
CAUSE
When you installed Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 and Microsoft Outlook
Express, you selected the option to make Outlook Express the default
Simple MAPI client.
NOTE: In some cases, a corrupt Mapi32.dll file has caused this problem.
RESOLUTION
Do not use Outlook Express as your default Simple MAPI client.
- or -
Find all instances of Mapi32.dll, rename each, and replace the Mapi32.dll
file in your System folder.
To Reset Your Default Simple MAPI Client
- Start Outlook Express.
- On the Tools menu, click Options.
- Click the General tab, then click to clear "Make Outlook Express my
Default Simple MAPI client."
- Restart Windows.
To Rename and Replace Your Mapi32.dll File
- Right click on the Mapi32.dll file in your Windows\System or Windows\System32 folder.
- Click Rename on the Shortcut menu.
- Type Mapi32.old as the new name for the file.
- Copy the Mapi32.dll from the OFFICE\WMS\WIN95 or OFFICE\WMS\WINNT
folder of your Office 97 setup compact disc, into your Windows\System
or Windows\System32 folder.
If you use the Small Business Edition of Office, copy the Mapi32.dll
from the OUTLOOK\OFFICE\WMS\WIN95 folder of your Office setup CD into
your Windows\System or Windows\System32 folder.
NOTE: Mapi32.dll is a system file. If you do not see this file on your
CD-ROM, click the Folder Options on the View menu of Windows Explorer,
and then under the View tab's Advanced settings, click the radio button
to select "Show all files" for Hidden files.
- In the Windows Explorer, click the file you copied to your hard drive, and on the File menu, click Properties.
- Click to clear the Read-Only check box, click to select the Archive check box, and click OK.
- Close the Explorer.
