Programmers can store Visual Basic Scripting Edition (VBScript) code in a Microsoft Outlook item and configure the code to automatically run when you open the item. This article describes how to open an Outlook item without running any VBScript code.

The behavior of Outlook may vary when you open an item that contains Visual Basic Scripting Edition code:

To prevent any VBScript code from running, hold down SHIFT while you open the item. For example, hold down SHIFT while you open an item to prevent the Visual Basic Script code for the Open event from running.
