In Microsoft Outlook, some e-mail messages do not trigger the arrival notification sound or dialog box display.
The arriving e-mail notification is on a 5-minute cycle. The first message arriving at the beginning of a cycle will be announced. Subsequent arrivals during the cycle will not trigger the notification. The notification will execute only once during the 5-minute cycle.
To turn on the e-mail arrival notification in Outlook, follow these steps:
1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
2. On the E-mail tab, under "When new items arrive," click to select the
"Play a sound" and/or "Display a notification message" check box.
3. Click Apply, and then click OK.
To be notified of each e-mail message arrival, follow these steps:
1. On the Tools menu, click the Inbox Assistant.
2. In the Inbox Assistant dialog box, click Add Rule.
3. In the Edit Rule dialog box, click to select the Alert With check box,
and then click Action.
4. In the Alert Actions dialog box, if not selected, click to select the
"Notify with the text" or the Play check box.
If "Notify with the text" is selected, type the text to be displayed
in the notification dialog box.
If Play is selected, click Sound, choose the sound file to be played,
and then click Test.
5. Click OK to close all dialog boxes.
