OL97: Text After First Comma Lost Exporting to Text File

ID: Q172001

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

If you export Contact information to a tab or comma delimited text file, some of your information may not export. Contact information that is not on the General page of the Contact form may not export properly if you include a comma in the field information. For example, typing names in the Contact "Children" field and separating each name with a comma exports only the first name. All names after the comma are lost when exporting.

RESOLUTION

If you enter multiple names in the "Children" field for example, use a single space between each name in the field.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

The following steps demonstrate this problem:

1. Open one of your contacts.

2. In the Categories box, type "one, two, three" without quotation marks.

3. Click the All Fields tab.

4. In the Select from list, click to select All Contact fields.

5. In the Value column of the Children field, type "John, Mary, Joe"

   without quotation marks.

6. Click Save and Close to close the contact form.

7. On the File menu, click Import and Export.

8. In the "Choose an action to perform" list, click "Export to a file"

   and click Next.

9. In the "Select folder to export from" tree make sure your Contacts
folder is selected and click Next.

10. In the "Create a file of type" list, click to select one of the "Tab
Separated Values" or "Comma Separated Values" choices and click Next.

11. In the "Save exported file as" box, type c:\test.txt and click Next
    and then Finish.

Once the export finishes, open the file, c:\test.txt, in Notepad. Under your contact, the categories (one, two, and three) all appear, but the only name for the contact is the first name (John). Mary and Joe did not export.
