OL97: Unable to Group by Subject

Last reviewed: January 19, 1998

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Outlook 97

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Outlook 97, if you group items by subject, the items may not appear in the same group. For example, two e-mail messages with the same subject appear in two different groups when grouped by the subject field.

CAUSE

The subject of one of the items may contain extra or trailing spaces. Grouping does not allow any differences in the grouped field.

WORKAROUND

You may be able to work around this behavior as follows.

If the items you are grouping were replies, as in a message thread, you can successfully group them by conversation. If the items are independent of each other (not a message thread) use one of these methods to group the items:

  • Edit the items, removing extra spaces from the subject field. Make sure you save changes to each item you edit.
  • Create and apply a category to each item, and then group by the
category.
