Proxy Server Fails if Virtual Memory Set Below Recommended Size

The information in this article applies to:

Microsoft Proxy Server versions 1.0 and 2.0

SYMPTOMS

If you are able to access pages through the Proxy Server, after some time it may stop serving pages with the following error messages:

   Requested Header was not found

   -or-

   HTTP/1.0 401 Object Not Found

No other pages can be accessed through the Proxy Server without stopping and restarting the service.

CAUSE

If virtual memory is set below the recommended size, the Proxy Server will use all the available memory and finally fail to complete requests. To fix this, the service must be stopped and restarted.

This can also occur if you installed Proxy Server version 1.0 after you installed Microsoft Windows NT Service Pack 3 (SP3), and you have not reinstalled Windows NT SP3.

WORKAROUND

Set the virtual memory to at least 20 MB over the recommended size. To do this, use the steps below:

1. Right-click My Computer and go to Properties.

2. In System Properties, click the Performance tab.

3. In Virtual Memory Section, click Change.

4. Look at the initial size under Paging File Size for the selected

   drive and compare with the Recommended Size under Total Paging File
   Size for All Drives.

5. If the initial size is below the recommended size, then set the initial size to at least 20 MB above the recommended size.

6. Click OK twice.

7. Reboot the server.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem with Microsoft Proxy Server versions 1.0 and 2.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
