Restart Not Always Necessary with Winsock Proxy

SUMMARY

When you change the state of the Remote WinSock (RWS) client, the operating system always prompts you to restart the system for the changes to take effect. However, you may not always need to restart the computer for the change to take effect.

The Remote WinSock Client properly changes states (from enabled to disabled or vice versa) without restarting the system, provided that both of the following conditions are true:

• You quit all 32-bit networking applications before you change the RWS state.

  -and-

• If you are running 16-bit Winsock applications, you use the Task Manager to end the Ntvdm.exe application. When you stop this application, all 16-bit applications running under this process are automatically stopped as well.
